Success of Government Legal Aid Services (2016-2017) with English Subtitles

The history of legal aid in Bangladesh is of recent origin. Legal aid to the indigent litigants was first taken up by the government by a resolution dated January 6, 1994. Under the resolution a legal aid committee was formed in every district chaired by District & Sessions Judge. Subsequently by another resolution dated March 22, 1997 the government formed a National Legal Aid Committee and also reconstituted District Legal Aid Committees.

In the year 2000 Legal Aid Services Act has been enacted to put the legal aid activities on a firm footing. On January 26, 2000 the Act was passed by the Parliament and this Act came into force with effect from April 28, 2000. The objective of the Act has been stated in the preamble that it is enacted to provide for legal aid to the litigants who are incapable of seeking justice due to financial insolvency, destitution, helplessness and for socio-economic conditions.

The Government legal aid program currently administered within the legal framework of the Legal Aid Services Act, 2000. National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has been established to implement legal aid program across the country.

The focus of the One Campaign is to engage more attorneys in providing pro bono legal services through their local legal aid programs by taking on ONE case. Put simply, the One Campaign speaks directly to the number one issue that many attorneys cite as an obstacle to providing pro bono legal services: time. Through the One Campaign attorneys are encouraged to take One case where they can utilize their unique skills to help regular citizens navigate the law. The One Campaign will also highlight both state and local opportunities that attorneys can take advantage of to provide these pro bono services. Pro Bono Celebration Week begins on Monday, October 26th at the Florida Supreme Court with a ceremony led by Chief Justice Peggy Quince.
