Another legal drama from Shona Rhimes? Oh no. Except this one is kinda realistic! For the People follows the lives of a handful of Federal prosecutors and Federal Public defenders in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York — aka the Mother Court (I really think this show was originally going to be called “The Mother Court” and then they changed the name at the last second. The SDNY is the oldest and most prestigious district court in the nation. The brand new lawyers (including a bunch of Supreme Court Clerks, obviously since this is a Shona Rhimes show) work for both the defense and the prosecution as they handle the most high profile and high stakes cases in the country – all as their personal lives intersect.

Stay until the end for my Legal Realism Grade!

I get asked a lot about whether being a practicing attorney is like being a lawyer on TV. I love watching legal movies and courtroom dramas. It’s one of the reasons I decided to become a lawyer. But sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out because they are ridiculous. Today I’m taking a break from teaching law students how to crush law school to take on lawyers in the movies and on TV. While all legal movies and shows take dramatic license to make things more interesting (nobody wants to see hundreds of hours of brief writing), many of them have a grain of truth.

This is part of a continuing series of “Lawyer Reaction” videos. Got a legal movie or TV show you’d like me to critique? Let me know in the comments!

An inspiring, uplifting video by Attorney Nikki Kavouklis of Zen 4 Law, a Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando County personal injury law firm. Visit http://zen4law.com.

In her over two decades of practicing law, Nikki has witnessed many changes in the area of personal injury law. These changes have occurred not just with the laws themselves, but in the overall demeanor of clients, fellow lawyers, judges, and healthcare professionals treating personal injury clients.

They became most noticeable after the economic downfall of 2008 when insurance companies began tightening their financial belts. Not only were insurance companies offering less in terms of injury and property damage settlements, budget cuts made throughout the legal system were overburdening defense lawyers and judges, thereby lengthening the time it took to litigate a case and bring it to trial. Insurance payments to healthcare professionals were also being drastically cut, sending many of these professionals out of business.

As an author and inspirational speaker (known by her pen name “Nikki Karis”), Nikki has helped countless people find their power and grow to their full potential. While working on her inspirational projects, she realized there was a need in the legal profession for inspiration, especially with so many clients and fellow professionals feeling overwhelmed by an overburdened, underfunded legal system. Lawyers, judges, and healthcare professionals needed to feel enlightened and inspired about the work they were doing, especially in the area of personal injury law, where clients struggle physically, emotionally, and financially to rebuild their lives.

In September of 2014, Nikki decided to take a brave, bold step into uncharted waters by incorporating inspiration into her legal practice. She changed the name of her law firm from the Law Offices of Nikki M. Kavouklis, P.A. to Zen 4 Law.

When someone visits an attorney, it is often because they are dealing with one of the most difficult obstacles in their lives. Whether it be injury, the death of a loved one, or some other stressful, traumatic life event, they are at a crossroads in their lives. Nikki realizes her clients need not only competent, experienced legal representation, but also inspiration and guidance to come through their legal struggles soundly, with the strength to move forward in their lives.

Contact Zen 4 Law today at 1-844-ZEN-4-LAW for a free consultation in the following areas of practice: auto accidents; motorcycle accidents; slips/trips and falls; wrongful death; medical negligence; nursing home abuse; defective products; defective drugs; defective medical devices; negligent security cases; and any other areas involving personal injury.

Learn about Nikki’s inspiring tool kit, including her uplifting messages, powerful affirmations, and motivating videos, all designed to help you come through your legal journey, a stronger, more inspired person.

A Calling to the Legal Profession –

Since early childhood, Nikki knew she was bound for a career as a lawyer, as she had a passion for writing, speaking, and helping others. In 1989, Nikki earned a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Florida, followed by her juris doctorate degree in 1992.

On April 19, 1999, Nikki opened her own law firm in Tarpon Springs, Pinellas County, Florida, after leaving her former partnership, focusing exclusively on the area of personal injury law. Since that time, Nikki has expanded her practice into Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties.

During her years of practice, Nikki has represented only plaintiffs and has never represented an insurance company. She has brought thousands of cases to settlement and trial since 1992 and continues to expand into new areas involving personal injury claims. She has represented clients for claims involving Fen-Phen, Baycol, Vioxx, Medtronic/Guidant, Zyprexa, hormone replacement therapy, tobacco, and other drug and medical device- related claims and lectured throughout Florida on first-party insurance issues.

Nikki is a member of the Florida Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Association of Southern Trial Lawyers, the Florida Justice Association, and the Clearwater Bar Association. She is also admitted to practice law in the Middle District of Florida.

Nikki serves clients in Tarpon Springs, New Port Richey, Spring Hill and Brooksville. Contact Zen 4 Law at 1-844-ZEN-4-LAW for more information and a free consultation with Nikki.

The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story is a limited series that takes you inside the O.J. Simpson trial with a riveting look at the legal teams battling to convict or acquit the football legend of double homicide. Based on the book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin, it explores the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution overconfidence, defense shrewdness, and the LAPD’s history with the city’s African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.

From Executive Producers Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski and Brad Falchuk, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story stars John Travolta, Cuba Gooding Jr., Sarah Paulson, David Schwimmer, Courtney B. The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story | Win | FX

English/Nat

O.J. Simpson was wrongfully accused by police who ignored witnesses because of a rush to judgement and by prosecutors determined to win by any means, a defence lawyer said in opening statements today (Wednesday.)

Trying to counter a litany of physical evidence cited by the prosecution Tuesday, Johnnie Cochran said the trial was a search for justice.

In his opening statement, defence lawyer Johnnie Cochran said that the defence would look into the trails that the prosecution didn’t pursue.

He said the prosecution description of the Simpsons’ marriage as violent and miserable was not exactly true.

He acknowledged that Simpson had pleaded no-contest to spousal battery in 1989 but said the former football star had “paid his debt” and that there was no evidence he had hurt Nicole Simpson after that.

He said Los Angeles police ignored at least two witnesses who offered information that could help exonerate Simpson.

One, he said, was a woman who saw four men walking near the murder scene the night of June 12, when Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were stabbed and slashed to death.

Cochran also referred to problems in collecting evidence, noting that a police trainee was among those at the crime scene.

Cochran spoke shortly after Superior Court Judge Lance Ito accepted Court TV’s apology for accidentally broadcasting the face of an alternate juror Tuesday and decided against pulling the plug on live television coverage.

Ito said he would allow a single, static shot of the courtroom until other physical limitations on the camera can be installed.

Attorney Says They Actually Put Photos of Black People in O.J.’s House

Simpson” defense lawyer Johnnie Cochran is shown supervising the removal of photos that show Simpson and his white friends, and the redecoration of the home with African art and photos. Attorney F.
